International Mailing

If you are a Cirrus owner (or former Cirrus owner) living outside the United States, Canada, or the UK, I apologize for writing in English!

This newsletter will include a one-time mailing to some Cirrus owners outside the US, Canada, and the UK. (That's one reason this newsletter is so short - to keep the international mailing costs down!) As the website has grown, the need for better data on Cirruses from non-English speaking nations is becoming more and more apparent.  So if you have a Cirrus, or formerly had a Cirrus, please consider sending us any detailed information you'd care to share for posting on the Cirrus website!!

If you would like to receive future newsletters, please confirm to Jim Kellett, 103 Settlers Circle, Winchester, VA  22602, United States, or via e-mail to Jim@Kellett.com.

We don't have the capability - yet - for posting pages in other languages, but would be delighted to have a volunteer who'd translate the entire site into other languages, especially German and/or Spanish.

 NEW!  The Spanish Fleet

Thanks to Roberto Ruiz (rruiz@goratu.com) we now have information on three more Cirruses, all located in Spain.  They're Serial Number 145, 149, and 153.  One has been destroyed ("a project looking for a resorer??") but the other two are flying.

Maintenance Networking

SOMETIMES the international network of Cirrus owners are able to make some wonderful things happen. A couple of examples:
    1.
Dean Aldinger (yo-dean@dellnet.com) is currently engaged in the complex restoration of Cirrus No. #64 which had been "returned to nature"He has encountered  a couple of problems rebuilding the shock absorbers on the main gear and finding seals for the water ballast dumps - within a couple of days, other Cirrus owners had provided useful tips!

    2. Burt Compton (No. 33) set out to implement the AD on the brake pushrod 95-09-11 and wanted to avoid reinventing the wheel.  In addition to the notes from Tom Foote in Canada that appeared in the November 1998 newsletter, Burt quickly heard from
H. Fredine [spectralcorp@earthlink.net] who reported that Mike Vieke (Vieke Aviation 618-943-5547, [far43@wworld.com]) did No. 24 in a similar fashion of removing the 6mm and welding an 8mm in place. The adjustment of the dive brake extension and lock position took a couple flights.
Steve Cameron [scamcot@bellsouth.net] bought the dive brake push rod with 8mm bolt from Knauff & Grove back in March of 1999 - Cost on the two rods were $ 276. Installation was not very difficult-It did take a little fooling around with to get the tension right on the dive brake lever.

Soaring Society of America Convention

This year it's in Indianapolis, Indiana.  It'll be Thursday through Saturday, February 7 - 10, 2001.  Once again, we'll post a notice at the registration area for a breakfast or lunch meeting that doesn't conflict (we hope!) with another meal-meeting.

Cirrus to be Featured in New Book

The world-reknowned aviation photographer, Hiroshi Seo of Tokyo, Japan, is editing a glider photo book "Gliders Around the World".  It will be sort of a directory in two editions - English and Japanese.  The format is 182 mm by 257 mm all color, 112 pages hard bound.  Each page has only one glider of 104 types, and will include the Cirrus!  The photo to be used is of N8169, No. 67, taken July 4, 2000 at the International Vintage Sailplane Meeting in Elmira, NY.  (Click http://home.adelphia.net/~jimkellett/N8169%20(Seo).jpg to get a sneak preview of the photo!)  Publishing date will be "early this year".
