Cirrus No.65, N8168

Currently Owned by: Daniel V. Hatfield

STATUS: In Service

LOCATION:

The original Bill of Sale, dated April 3, 1969 reported the sale from Schempp-Hirth to Allen L. Leffler of Los Alamitos (shortly thereafter, Ventura) CA.

This is also the ship that was tested by Paul Bikle, and who reported a best L/D of 37 at 50 kts (dry) and 55 kts (wet) in Soaring, June 1970 (see page 16).

Allen placed 8th place in the 1970 Nationals, and 4th in the Region 12 Regionals in August-September, 1973 in the ship.

Allen sold it on January 18, 1975 to Hans and Madeleine A. Holland of Sherman Oaks, CA. On February 28, 1976, Fred Jiran Glider Repair in Mojave, CA filed a Form 337 describing his repair to minor damage to the fuselage, installation of a new rear canopy, tightening of horizontal stabilizer fittings, repair of access holes; and on the left wing, repair of minor damage to leading edge, delamination 4’ inboard of tip, front lift fitting inside water tank, and replaced lift fitting support block; on the right wing, replacement of rear lift fitting, repair of root end aft of spar upper and lower surfaces, and re-skinning from station 14’ outboard to the tip. (The current owner, Daniel Hatfield, reports that he understood that the pilot - presumably one of the Hollands - ground looped around a steel fence post while landing.)

On September 25, 1977, the Hollands sold No. 65 to William S. Jennings of West Covina CA for $8,000, and he flew it until selling it on August 12, 1983 to the current owner, Daniel Hatfield of Buena Park, CA.

The current owner reports that as of 1996, the plane has about 800 hours total time.
